I bought this fossil fish on Ebay and it is so perfectly preserved that I actually smelled it to see if it still reeked of dead fish!
Vast shoals of such fish are buried under great depths of rock - usually limestone - but what could kill and preserve them so quickly as we know small dead fish are quickly scooped up by all manner or seabirds, bigger fish and crabs!
Likewise in Siberia huge herds of mammoths - one estimate is half a million! - were buried and deep frozen in black muck rich in organic matter. Clearly something catastrophic occurred to kill and bury tiny and massive creatures!
